Curtis & His Cars!

Doug was the kind of guy who loved to tinker and fix things. He especially loved motors. He and his Dad, Bud, took apart and put back together a lot of engines and machinery in their years of farming. Curtis Meyer is a young man Doug and I have known since our daughter, Kristin, moved to Missouri many years ago. We have watching him grow into a young entrepreneur. Curtis has always loved cars and had the “hand on” attitude that we admire. We are proud to select Curtis as our next Are We Having Fun Yet Fund recipient. Good luck Curtis! We wish you the best at Pitt State!

Please read a little bit from this wonderful write-up that Curtis provided us:

My name is Curtis Meyer, and I have to start with cars. I have many interests and hobbies, but none have kept with me like cars. You might even say it is in my blood. There is a picture of me when I was around 6 months old being held by famous Pontiac drag racer Arnie Beswick. I probably got the car craze from my grandfather, Arthur Barrett. Some of my favorite memories growing up were riding in his 64 GTO, going for evening ice cream runs. Naturally, I went to as many car shows as I could. All of this culminated in me buying a car that I could bring to car shows myself. My car, a 1959 Pontiac Catalina, has already won me several awards at local shows, but what I love most about it is just driving it. Of course, cars like that are too expensive to use as daily drivers, so naturally I went all out. I bought a Subaru from my cousin that needed fixing, which after a new radiator, brakes, shocks, struts, spark plugs, and miscellaneous other items ran just fine. I actually sold it just a month ago, also marking the first time I have sold a car.

My largest and most recent project was my truck I bought from my uncle last August. It had rats living in it, which were chased out by cats. That led to my truck smelling somewhere between horrible and disgusting, not to mention the layers of gunk that built up on the engine, topped by the rats hoarding food on top of the intake manifold. It lasted less than a thousand miles before it ate a spark plug, leading to me replacing the entire engine. That took a little longer than expected, but now the new engine is in and the truck runs like new.

All of these experiences led to me deciding I want to pursue a career in engineering technology at Pitt State University in Kansas. Other than cars, I also enjoy going to church and playing bass for the worship band, tennis, and collecting record albums. I was the number one on the tennis team my senior year, and hope to continue playing just for fun while in college. I currently have more albums than room to display them, and still need to collect more. If you know anyone with Three Dog Night or Mamas and the Papas albums, I would be very interested. My time with the church has led me to volunteer at lots of events, like VBS or dessert auctions. We also handed out food during COVID, helping families in need. For right now I am just mowing and working trying to drum up money for college. I am eagerly looking forward to going to college. Thank you for taking the time to read this, I hope you enjoyed it.
